Dietrich Klinge | Possibilities

The artist Dietrich Klinge is an outstanding contemporary German sculptor with international fame.

In his new works, Klinge adds a new element to his material cosmos: cut and uncut gemstones. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of Greco-Roman art, who supplemented their bronze heads with colorful stones to give them an almost living look.

The starting point for his archaic-looking sculptures are pieces of wood in more or less advanced decay, from which Klinge works out his fragmentary figures and faces before casting them in bronze. Here, nothing is smoothed or soothed. The rough marks of the tools are
echoed in the natural fractures and cracks of the wood pieces. But as rough as the forms are, as touching is their depth of expression. In an almost somnambulistic way, Klinge succeeds in his works in striking a balance between struggling poles - a balance that reflects the entire
fragility of life and thus the primal dilemma of humanity.
